Essay # 96

Some people believe that children should listen to and obey their parents. Others believe that children should think and do things on their own. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The discussion about teaching discipline to children is always met with different opinions. Traditionally, it is parents who imbibe such qualities in children. Nevertheless, a new practice is being argued for, that children should learn things themselves without parents teaching them the way. This essay shall elaborate both these aspects further.

On one hand, it is a sensible approach to let parents steer their child till a certain age, after which they can identify rights and wrongs based on the teachings given by their parents. A small child always looks up to his parents and instinctively waits for instructions or approval of his parents before doing anything, even anything new. If we take an example of crayons and a colouring book, a child of 4-5 years would not know how to colour properly in the book, and here’s where parents step in and teach the child the proper way. This is a very small example compared to other instances of life where parental guidance is very essential.

On the other hand, the new-age parents are building a popular opinion of letting the children become independent. This approach believes in letting the children learn the way of life on their own and make their own mistakes, and learn and grow. This approach has a significant advantage of the child not being a carrier of the mindset of his parents, rather, he will be able to develop his own stand on various issues that concern him. To illustrate, say the parents are strictly religious and do everything by the book, but the child, if let free to decide on his own, shall have a more liberal view on religion, making him a less rigid, a more flexible individual.

Keeping both the approaches in mind, I opine that a little bit of parental supervision is necessary for the child to at least start with his journey of decision making. Thereafter, he can be allowed to make his own decisions and learn from them. This healthy balance of both methods can ensure an ideal personality of a child.
