The internet has become an integral part of everyone’s life. Governments in many countries are actively widening internet accessibility for all by setting up the necessary infrastructure. However, some believe there are more pressing issues that need government attention. Both these views shall be discussed further in this essay.

The invention of the internet has revolutionised how the world works. It gives us access to all the information in the world. Processes like filing tax returns, applying for an exam, paying bills, opening a bank account – all these things have been made available online thanks to the internet. To digitalize our world even more, the governments spend to set up internet availability in areas that still are deprived of it.

By giving internet facilities to the poor and rural areas, the government is also empowering them to be a part of the modern lifestyle. Many small scale business owners in the villages can take their products to the world market with the help of the internet. Distance learning is enabled and villagers can be educated. Of course, giving this facility all over the country requires time and money, but this framework is much needed for their development.

I certainly agree that there are issues of poverty, sanitation, health and environment and so on that need government money to be solved. However, I do not feel that the money allocated for internet infrastructure needs to be cut down and diverted. On the contrary, setting this infrastructure up is helping solve problems of illiteracy, ignorance regarding the world events, and unemployment.

Therefore to conclude, I justify the amount being spent on setting up internet infrastructure by the government. The internet is bringing the world closer and directing it onto the single path towards development.
