While there may be different methods through which people might approach Task I of the IELTS General Training module, here’s a set of predefined steps to help you formulate your letter easily.
Strategy for Letter Writing:
Steps
Strategy
Suggested time
Step I
Read the question very
carefully, twice if need be. Make
sure you understand the central idea and the task requirements.
1.5 to 2 minutes
Step II
Draft out a plan of your letter. Categorize
what you would be writing in which paragraph.
Instantly note down good vocabulary that
comes to your mind.
2 to 3 minutes
Step III
Start writing. If you
have planned well, writing your letter would be a breeze. Make sure you don’t stop to think and change your draft. This wastes time and the end result might not be as good
as you desire. Once you finalize your draft, stick to it.
12 minutes
Step IV
Proof read your
letter to correct any grammatical or spelling mistakes. You
can save around 40% of your chances of getting marks cut when you proof read
properly.
2 to 3 minutes
Please note that trying out a predefined template in writing needs practice before you can master the time limit given. You may have some difficulty in organizing your flow of thoughts in accordance to the above mentioned procedure. Try writing a couple of letters and then you should get the hang of it.
