It is very important to have a conducive environment in schools and offices as we spend a lot of time there. Therefore, the designing aspects of such places need to be very carefully laid out – one of the suggestions for that is to have more open spaces, which I agree will be a quite beneficial development. This essay shall elaborate this suggestion further.

Considering the advantages of having open plans for schools, the most obvious characteristic is the flexible use of space, furniture, and equipment. Students can work in various areas of the room, instead of sitting in the linear arrangement of desks, encouraging creative thinking. Sharing is also a behavioral characteristic that is promoted in open classrooms as the students visibly track each other’s progress, and learn to lend help. The teacher too, can be highly mobile and efficiently move to the particular set of students where she is needed most.

Open offices are economical because they minimize the costs of equipment and office space. It’s also easier to chart an employee’s progress when they are out in plain sight instead of holed up in some cubicle. Coworkers are better able to collaborate in an open space, rather than have to go hunt someone down in their office or cubicle. So, creativity and productivity are given a boost.

Negative factors of having open spaces at work and schools include teachers having to raise their voice over large groups of students, distracting classroom layout. Same goes for offices - meaning high levels of noise, conflicts becoming distracting for others, employees being unable to engage in confidential or private conversations, and use of mobile phones becoming ineffectual. In fact, more than schools, open space offices seem to be a bad idea.

Therefore, I’d conclude by saying that the concept of open planned schools can be more successful than open planned offices. Students, being livelier than adults, can enjoy more in an unconventional atmosphere of spacious, dynamic classrooms.
