Since the last two decades, people have started overspending
on beauty products and procedures. I believe this is mainly prompted by the
desire to look attractive and garner appreciation.
Looking good and wanting to get praised for it is a part of
human nature. Everyone loves to get complimented on their looks. However, this
need was not very evident in the past as there were a few occasions where
people got the chance to really dress up and makeup. With more beauty products
being advertised and more awareness being spread about them, people today feel
that they are an essential part of their lifestyle. Another contributing factor
is that beauty products and procedures have become very affordable in the past
few years. For example, plastic surgery was a big deal in the 1990s, socially,
as well as monetarily. But today, it has become as common as a tonsil surgery.
Many of us follow the lives of celebrities on social media.
Little do we realize that the photographs we see are uploaded after much
editing; not to mention the already glamorous make-up done on the celebrities
beforehand. The people who crave to look like these celebrities, or wish for
their social media account to be full of such photos of themselves, they are
the ones who get urged to keep buying beauty products or get beautification
surgeries. The only effect this phenomenon has on the society is that cosmetic industries
keep making money and launching more products and people keep becoming accustomed
to beauty care. In other words, it is an everlasting circle. A principal
negative effect would be when people wouldn’t know when and where to stop at.
In conclusion, I think that men and women have made taking
care of their appearance as one of the important parts of their lifestyle,
which is why they spend a lot on beauty care. If people would know where to
draw the line between necessary and excessive spending, this phenomenon won’t
have any serious negative impacts.
