Some people think that in the modern world we are more dependent on each other, while others think that people have become more independent. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

On one hand there are instances in the modern society that show how humans are closely dependent on each other, while on the other, we can also see people becoming more independent and headstrong. In my personal opinion, I feel we have become more independent individuals.

Considering the example of an individual in a corporate environment, he is always seen developing contacts and widening his circle of friends and colleagues. Surveys reveal that people do this because these contacts help them either in their careers or in their personal lives in the form of asking for favours. Another example where people can be seen dependent on each other is when they live alone and have to be dependent on laundry services, maids, cooks - basically people to help you with your chores. In a modern environment where individuals who live alone go to work for the entire day, they need to depend on people to manage their living space. In these aforementioned cases, it can be said that the modern society has made us dependent on each other.

Modern society and individual independence are also closely linked. More and more youngsters are seen leaving their parents’ houses and moving to other cities to live alone and study or work. The major decisions of one’s life, regarding education, career, marriage, building a home, are all taken by people themselves according to the life they choose to lead. Technological progress has also made people self-reliant, like using virtual personal assistants (Google Home, Amazon Alexa), compact computers, and automatic gadgets around the house. The raging movement of gender equality in the past few years has also removed the question of whether women are as independent as men – they are.

In conclusion, I feel both these situations, of being dependent on each other, as well as being independent are true for the modern society. However, I feel that the latter is more widespread.
