Essay # 48

In some countries children start school at the age of four and in other countries at the age of seven. Some people believe that early school start is affecting parent-child relationships. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of starting school early and give your own opinion.

All countries have their own standards of imparting education, therefore the starting age for school for children varies. Although, whether to start schooling children as early as at 4 years is being debated nowadays. Some people believe a late start would be better for the kids. This essay shall discuss both these views in detail.

The first day of school is an exciting milestone for children and parents alike. Children learn to be independent early on in life and start opening up to people of their own age and also start making friends on their own in school, if they start at 4 years. It can be understood why this self-sufficiency is termed as having a contrasting effect on parent-child relationships, but in reality, it doesn’t affect that much that schooling needs to get delayed. For a child to be successful in an educational environment they must be able to engage with their peers and understand the basics – the earlier, the better; and 4 years seems a suitable age. Nevertheless, it might be wrong to reach a conclusion before knowing about the drawbacks too of early schooling.

The idea that children should start schooling at the age of 7, may appear to be a good one, as by then they have gained a certain level of maturity and a few social skills from their parents and family, which would be helpful in an unfamiliar environment. Moreover, the early years of a child’s life require utmost love and attention from parents, and this can be taken care of if the child starts school later. It is seen so many times that little kids weep all the way to their school as they cannot bear the separation of their parents at the tender age of 4; it seems very insensitive to make a child go through this ordeal every day. However, it can’t also be denied that small children get used to going to school after some days as a habit has been formed, so this significant drawback also can be solved.

To conclude, I’d support starting schooling early on for children. But there being no simple answer, I’d say it depends on the child, their resources and the quality of preschool available, whether to send a child to school when he’s 4 or 7.
