Essay # 54
Nowadays many nations are facing the problem of declining number of
students attending science subjects at university. What do you think are the
underlying reasons for such trend? How can it affect these nations and why?
There has been an agonizing
decrease in the number of students opting to study science in universities. This
is a cause of concern especially in regards to a nation’s progress. Many theories
have been proposed for the reason of such a phenomenon which shall be discussed
in detail in this essay.
It is generally seen that students
are fascinated by the scientific principles used in real life. While the
interest is obviously there, not enough students continue to study science. In addition, in developing countries, teachers
do not always have the right background, and many students consider chemistry
and physics to be difficult. This is the main reason why many students choose
to opt for an easier branch of studies so that they may enjoy their college
life too. Science students are expected to control themselves when it comes to
getting distracted from studies, or risk failing.
Another reason is that the study
of science, however reputed it used to be in the past, and still is, doesn’t
guarantee you a high paying job. This is the one motivation which most people
nowadays work for. Plus the cost of science education is higher compared to commerce
stream. Naturally, students would go for the alternative that primarily costs
less, and secondly does not give a very hard life after college.
The discouragement in the
students to opt for science is a worrying development. Advancement of science
and technology is vital for the progress of any country. It is a major vehicle
for enhancing the quality of human life. Therefore active efforts should be
made by the government in terms of curriculum, classroom structure and fees, apart
from other relevant issues, in order to encourage students to study in science
at universities.
To conclude, I’d say lack of motivational
factors and assurance of a good career is bringing down the enrolments in the science
stream. Government of such nations should adopt dynamic measures to reverse
this phenomenon.

ReplyDeleteHello!
DeleteThe HOWEVER used in the 1st line of the 3rd paragraph has the meaning of "in whatever way / to whatever extent / regardless of how." It is NOT used as a contradicting connector here.
The sentence has been re-framed below for your better understanding:
"Another reason is that the study of science doesn’t guarantee you a high paying job, regardless of how reputed it may have been in the past."
Word "agonizing" in first line in the first paragraph sound emotional. I think it will be more appropriate if we put in academically like significant, etc
