Essay # 17
Nowadays many historic buildings receive lack of preservation treatment, with some buildings being damaged or even destroyed. Why is this happening? What can be done to change this situation?
Indifference towards
one's heritage or culture seems to be the mainspring of historic buildings
being neglected and left to damage. In regards to the vast amount of heritage
that every small or big city in the world holds, it is essential that the
precious memoirs of the same be preserved and treasured.
Since the last decades,
many historic buildings have been subjected to abandonment and vandalism due to
thefts, lack of governmental funds and secularization. As the society
developed, people started to move forward leaving behind their sense of
belonging towards their heritage. Even now, many historic structures that are
now surrounded my modern infrastructure, stand aloof and forgotten, with no
specific organization to take a proper responsibility for their maintenance.
Over time, these buildings and structures start to wear and eventually fall
down, or get pulled down.
There is no other say
that this situation needs to be salvaged. In our quest for modernization, we
must also accommodate our history and keep the buildings portraying that,
alive. The problem here is lack
of interest and that is what needs to be changed. The most primary thing
to do would be making the locals aware and concerned about the significance of
the historic buildings, so that people refrain from intentionally, or unintentionally,
damaging it. Severe guidelines should be formed by a special committee
appointed by the authorities for this specific purpose, and its roles should be
clearly defined.
Conducting occasional
public events depicting the cause of existence of the historic buildings will
encourage people to visit such monuments frequently and develop an attachment
for something this consequential for their city. Also, attracting
tourists will also add to the funds established for the conservation of such
buildings thereby gradually solving the problem of related expenditure.
To conclude, I would
emphasize that the people need to realize the importance of being attached and
feeling proud of the historic buildings that
had been painstakingly erected by our ancestors. It is a very
undemanding task to preserve them if we all understand our sincerity towards
our heritage and work together to conserve the same.
