Graph # 7 - Line Graph
Given below is a chart showing the number of first marriages and remarriages between 1951 and 2001, as well as the overall number of marriages over this period of time. Write a report for a university lecturer, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given line graph is a
calculation of the total number of marriages in addition to the composition of
the people who married for the first time and those who remarried. The
information presented spans over 5 decades with the numbers indicated in hundred
thousand.
The number of people who
got married in 1951 was just above 400,000, out of which 80%, that is around
320,000 people were getting married for the first time. This count remains
steady throughout 1961, when we start seeing a rise in the number of marriages.
By 1971, the number had gone up to around 480,000, 390,000 out of which were
first marriages.
We see a decline in the
number of marriages in the consequent years, with the next two decades
accounting for 400,000 total marriages, and around 250,000 first ones. The
number dips further towards 2001, reaching 300,000 total and 190,000 first
marriages, ending at the same number in 2009.
Remarriages were not very
popular which is why we see only around 80,000 people remarrying in 1951
through 1961, rising up to a 130,000-135,000 in the next decade. This count
remains mostly consistent throughout the time period given with a slight sink
towards 2009. Overall around 80% of the number of total marriages consisted of first marriages,
and remarriages remained well below 150,000.
