Essay # 13

Life expectancy and mortality rates have improved by very impressive standards these days. Naturally we have people living longer, eventually adding to the number of elderly people in the society. Although it cannot be termed as anything negative, I am compelled to say that this situation might have some significant drawbacks.

Due to the global advancements made in the sectors of education, finance and public health, including many others, the old aged people are benefited quite a lot, mostly in the developed countries. Despite of this positive development, there are some issues faced by these governments. As the number of senior people increases, the budget allocation for their welfare automatically rises. This situation will also be aligned with density problems in terms of overloading of hospital and housing facilities.

The scenario is even worse in developing countries where it is observed that the quality of life gets significantly reduced the older the people become. Elderly people are usually struggling with both mental and physical problems and often they have a lonely and sorrowful life in the last years of their life. The life expectancy has increased quantitatively everywhere, but in my opinion not qualitatively enough. We should help people to live longer, and more importantly better.

It would be morally wrong to say that all the older people are burdensome for the society as we too are in queue. What the society needs is to be more compassionate towards the aged. The government of the countries that is currently not capable of imparting enough benefits for the old people should come up with policies in affiliation with countries having better societal welfare schemes. This can ensure reasonable distribution of funds in all sectors of the society so that no over-consumption or under-allocation of resources is faced by the community on the whole.

To conclude, I'd say the increase in the number of older people has only that much of negative impact as we make of it. Harmonious existence in the society among different individuals, and no feelings of ill-will promoted by a well-organized government are some of the factors that might prevent the people from feeling as if this is a negative phenomenon.
