Nowadays people prefer to shop in large supermarkets rather than nearby local shops. Why do you think this happens? Is this a positive or a negative trend? Give your opinion and examples from your own experience.

Supermarkets are becoming increasingly popular, leaving the local stores far behind in competition. The reason for such a phenomenon is the enhanced shopping experience for consumers. Overall it is a positive trend, and this stand shall be explained further in the essay.

According to latest statistics, most people are now favouring supermarkets for the simple reason that everything they require can be shopped from under one roof like groceries, apparels, electronics, toiletries and so on. Supermarkets have a large air-conditioned ambiance, along with organized departments and a trained, friendly staff to assist customers with their shopping requirements. Moreover, supermarkets stock a variety of brands and products which make the consumer’s selection wider and his choice a more well-informed one. Unlike certain malpractices of the local shops, say of promoting a particular brand only, supermarkets take the feedback of their customers and stock products accordingly.

Since supermarkets stock products in a larger quantity, they are able to quote them in prices cheaper than other smaller retail stores. Many supermarket chains run offers and discount coupon schemes. Also, some supermarkets also offer home delivery services which is undoubtedly a considerable benefit. Although there is a drawback of more time being consumed in search of items, it can be passed upon as shopping is becoming more of a leisure time activity day by day. Catering to this need, some supermarkets also house a food court, making the consumers’ shopping time a very enjoyable one.

Needless to say, superstores are definitely the more preferred choice by consumers. The convenient and cheaper shopping experience, along with trusted quality products has marked their rationalized rise in the market.
