Some people think that giving children a certain amount of money every week will help them have fewer financial problems in the future. Do you agree or disagree?

It is great to start children young when it comes to allowance, and some people believe giving them money on a weekly basis would teach them how to manage money as adults. However, it is not necessary that this method has the desired outcome. This essay shall discuss this argument in detail and provide a personal stand.

Many experts believe that with the growing awareness in the children of this generation, you can start as early as three years old by giving children a small amount of money, and teaching them to put it in a safe place thereby making them understand the responsibility of handling money. Gradually, children learn about making choices, saving up and waiting for things they want. As they grow older, parents can also teach them about borrowing and lending. This prepares them for skilfully managing money when they stay away from home in the future.

On the contrary, some believe that children do not have enough understanding and control especially when confronted with temptation. This notion holds true for many obvious reasons, but there are more effective counter-measures to prevent it. Explaining to your child what pocket money is for and what it’s not for, also, determining the allowance amount based on the kids actual needs and communicating this to him will make him realize the money he’s getting isn’t for lavish expenses, and he’ll have to save up if he wants to do the same. It is natural that children do not think the same way as adults when it comes to spending money, but with effective supervision and discipline, they will not be able to abuse the privilege of pocket money given to them.

Therefore to conclude, I completely agree that children should be paid weekly allowances; it makes them feel independent. Since children learn their attitudes towards money from home, a constructive environment regarding use of pocket money should be created in the family.
